A Fresh Start for Your Inventory
The new year is the perfect time to reset your inventory management. Whether you have been inconsistent with audits or never started at all, January gives you a clean baseline to build from.
Resolution 1: Audit Monthly, No Exceptions
The single most impactful change you can make. Commit to one full cycle count per month, on the same date, using the same process. Put it on the calendar now for all 12 months. Treat it like paying rent -- non-negotiable.
Resolution 2: Clean Your Product Data
January is the time to fix all those product entries you have been meaning to update. Correct misspelled names, add missing barcodes, update categories, remove discontinued items, and ensure every product has accurate cost information.
Resolution 3: Implement Blind Counts
If you have been using open counts (showing expected quantities to counters), switch to blind counts for your monthly audits. The improvement in accuracy will be immediate and significant.
Resolution 4: Track Shrinkage as a KPI
Start tracking your shrinkage rate as a key performance indicator. Measure it after every audit and chart it over time. You cannot improve what you do not measure. Set a target: if you are at 2%, aim for 1.5% by mid-year.
Resolution 5: Train Your Team
Spend one hour training every employee on inventory procedures -- how to receive shipments, how to process damages, how to handle discrepancies. This one-time investment prevents errors all year long.
Resolution 6: Use Technology
If you are still counting with pen and paper, upgrade to a scanning-based audit tool. The time savings alone justify the cost, and the accuracy improvement will reduce your shrinkage significantly.
Resolution 7: Act on What You Find
The biggest audit failure is not counting incorrectly -- it is counting correctly and then doing nothing with the data. When an audit reveals a discrepancy, investigate immediately. When patterns emerge, change your processes. Data without action is just numbers on a screen.
Make 2026 the year your inventory works for you instead of against you. Start with these seven resolutions and build from there.
